Moneypenny vs AI Receptionist: Which Should You Buy?

Moneypenny puts trained people on your phone; an AI receptionist answers and books at a flat monthly cost. Here is when each one wins.

Moneypenny vs AI Receptionist: Which Should You Buy?

Moneypenny puts trained people on your phone and passes you messages or transfers; an AI receptionist is software that answers every call at once, checks your calendar and books the appointment. If your callers want to book, the AI is usually the better buy. If they want to talk to a person, Moneypenny is.

I co-founded Automis, and we sell an AI receptionist, so I have a side in this. I will say plainly where Moneypenny is the better choice. If you want to see what we build, our AI voice receptionist is done for you: we set it up, connect it to your calendar and run it.

What is Moneypenny, and what does it cost?

Moneypenny is a UK telephone answering service where trained receptionists answer your calls in your company name, then take a message, transfer the call or follow your instructions. It is the best-known brand in the UK for this, and it sells to businesses of every size.

The price is the awkward part. Moneypenny does not publish it. Its telephone answering page says pricing is "flexible and based on your needs" and sends you to a quote form. So the honest figure here is price on request. What the page does publish is the structure:

  • Smaller schemes include 150 minutes or fewer, with a minimum contract of three months and one month's notice.
  • Larger schemes depend on the volume of included minutes, with a six or twelve month commitment and three months' notice.
  • Standard hours are 8.30am to 6.00pm, with calls outside those hours going to voicemail. Evening, weekend and 24/7 options are mentioned without detail.

Third-party blogs quote specific monthly figures for Moneypenny. I am not repeating them because they are not from the vendor and they disagree with each other. Get a written quote for your own call volume.

An AI receptionist is priced differently. Ours starts from 297 EUR a month, flat, and covers answering, booking and follow-up. For the wider picture, see our breakdown of what an AI receptionist costs.

How do they differ in a real working day?

The difference shows up at 8.10am, at lunch and at 7pm, so here is a day in a dental practice. This is an example I built to show the mechanics, not a client's data.

At 8.10am, three people ring within two minutes while your team is setting up. With Moneypenny, a person answers, greets in your name, takes details and sends you the messages, probably within the minutes they are billed for. With an AI receptionist, all three calls are answered at once, each caller is offered real free slots, and the appointments land in the diary. Nobody has to ring anyone back.

At lunch, a patient rings, upset about a bill. The human service is better here. A trained person can listen, soften the call and pass it on with context. The AI can recognise the call and hand it to you, but it should not be improvising comfort.

At 7pm, a new patient rings after seeing your ad. Under standard Moneypenny hours that call goes to voicemail, unless you have bought an extended option. The AI answers and books. This is where much of the money sits for appointment businesses: a new patient who gets no answer at 7pm may well ring the next practice instead.

When we built the receptionist for Clinica Santa Maria, a dental clinic, the problems were the ones above: missed calls, booking and no-shows. We built the receptionist to answer, book and remind. A message service covers the first of those and leaves the other two with your team.

You can size the missed-call side of this yourself with our free missed call revenue calculator.

How should you test either option before signing?

Test either option on your own call volume, not on a demo. Ask Moneypenny for a written quote at the number of calls you really get in a month, and ask in the same email whether out-of-hours cover and booking into your calendar are included or extra, because the published page does not say. Check the minimum term and the notice period before you agree to anything.

For an AI receptionist, ask for a two-week trial on live calls, not a scripted demo. Read the call recordings or transcripts at the end of it and count how many callers got what they wanted. Make one test call yourself while sounding annoyed, and confirm the call is handed to a person with the details already captured. If a vendor will not let you test the handoff, that tells you what you need to know.

What are the strengths and limits of each?

Moneypenny's strength is the human voice and judgement. A trained receptionist can handle a nervous caller, a complicated enquiry, a call that does not fit any script, or a VIP who expects a person. The service has also been around long enough that you are buying a known quantity.

Its limits, as I read the published terms: it is built around minutes, so a busy month changes the bill; the contract has a minimum term; standard hours are office hours; and the core job is taking messages and transferring calls. Booking into your calendar is something you would need to confirm in the quote, because the telephone answering page does not describe it.

An AI receptionist's strength is availability and action. It answers instantly, every time, in several languages if you need them, and it can book, reschedule and send a reminder. Cost is flat, so a month with double the calls costs the same.

Its limits are real. It is weaker with emotionally charged calls. Callers who dislike talking to software will say so. A badly configured one is worse than a person, because it fails confidently. That last point is why I would not recommend a self-serve tool for a business that has no time to test it, and why we build and run ours for clients. It also means ours is not an app you sign up for and configure yourself in an afternoon.

Which should you choose?

Choose Moneypenny if your callers mostly want a conversation with a person, and choose an AI receptionist if they mostly want to book. The lists below break that down.

Choose Moneypenny if

  • Most of your calls are conversations, not bookings: complex enquiries, complaints, sales calls that need a human ear.
  • Your callers are high value and expect a named, trained person.
  • Your volume is low and steady, so a small minute bundle fits.
  • Your team is happy to book appointments themselves from the messages you receive.
  • You are a business where an AI voice would feel wrong to your clients, and you know that about them.

Choose an AI receptionist if

  • Your calls are mostly bookings, reschedules and common questions: dental, medical, beauty, trades, professional services.
  • You lose calls at lunch, in the evening or when everyone is busy, and each missed call is a missed appointment.
  • You want a flat monthly cost instead of minute bundles.
  • You want the call to end with a diary entry, not a message to action.
  • You need to answer in more than one language.

Or use both

My own view is that the hybrid is underrated. Let the AI take the routine calls and booking, and route anything emotional or complicated to a person, either your team or a human service. You pay for human attention only where it earns its cost.

Where Automis sits

We are the AI side of this comparison, and we are done for you: we build the receptionist, connect it to your calendar, WhatsApp or CRM, and run it, from 297 EUR a month. It suits appointment businesses where the phone is the main way new clients arrive. It is not the right buy if your calls are mostly sensitive conversations. If you are unsure, ask Moneypenny for a quote and ask us for one, then put both next to your real call volume.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does Moneypenny cost?

Moneypenny does not publish prices. Its telephone answering page says pricing is flexible and based on your needs, and asks you to request a quote. It does say schemes of 150 included minutes and below carry a three-month minimum contract.

Is an AI receptionist cheaper than Moneypenny?

Usually, once call volume is steady, because an AI receptionist is a flat monthly fee rather than a bundle of minutes. Automis starts from 297 EUR a month. Because Moneypenny quotes on request, ask for a written price for your own call volume before you compare.

Can an AI receptionist replace Moneypenny?

For routine calls, yes: answering, booking, rescheduling and common questions. It is a weaker fit where callers are upset, the call needs judgement, or you want a named person who knows your clients. Many businesses keep people for those calls.

Does Moneypenny answer calls 24 hours a day?

Its telephone answering page gives standard hours of 8.30am to 6.00pm, with voicemail outside them. It mentions evening, weekend and 24/7 options without details, so confirm the exact hours in your quote. An AI receptionist answers at any hour by default.

Can an AI receptionist book into my calendar?

Yes, when it is connected to it. That connection is the main difference from a message-taking service. Ask any vendor to show a live test booking in your own calendar before you sign, and check what happens when the slot is already taken.
